There can't be any more important dates for this school year than March 12 - 14 and 20 - 21. Those are the times this spring when the MSA Reading and
Mathematics Assessments will be administered to all of our students. These high stakes tests figure in on everything that happens in our school . . . in every school. They have implications for promotion decisions for our students; they are more and more being touted as indicators of teacher quality; they provide data relative to the effectiveness of a school and school system's curriculum process and; they play a crucial role in determining ratings of schools, under the No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top accountability processes.
Yet, an argument could be made for the thinking that every day is important, very important in our schools. If we concentrate on just the test days, and do nothing to support our teachers and to prepare of students for that eventuality, does that not make the days of the test less important? Creating, implementing, and evaluating curricular models on a routine basis is of paramount importance to our success on those days that the tests are given.
