Mace's Lane's Rich History...

Mr. Tyrone Seymour speaks at Mace's Lane Middle School's Opening Ceremony and Dedication.

The history of Mace’s Lane Middle School began during the late 1940’s.  The superintendent at the time was W.T. Boston.  In 1949, Mr. Boston, the Board of Education, and County Commissioner Charles Cornish selected the site for what would become Dorchester County’s only African-American high school, Mace’s Lane.  The building was planned and designed by Johannes & Murray Architects of Silver Spring, Maryland.  The campus was to cover about 90 acres.
Construction began on June 15, 1951, and continued until the summer of 1952.  In June 1953, the first graduating class from Maces Lane High School proudly walked down the aisles of the school.  The schools motto, then as now, was “Prepare today for leadership tomorrow.”  The school’s principal, Miss Edythe M. Jolley, led the class.

Alumni showed their Tiger pride, commitment and enthusiasm when they sang their alma mater, "The Orange and Blue" and dressing in traditional school colors.

The history of Mace’s Lane High School is an integral part of the design for the new Middle School.  The Mace’s Lane school colors will be used as an accent throughout the new facility.  The Media Center will feature a Mentoring Center that will allow alumni and community members to participate at the new school.  In addition, space in the Media Center is dedicated to memorializing the history of Mace’s Lane High School and Middle School.
Display cabinets will line Main Street and the lobby that will allow for both displays of present student work as well as memorabilia from the High School.  The school mascot; the Mace’s Lane Tiger, will feature prominently in both the lobby and the gymnasium.  The exterior of the school will feature a “Walk of Fame”  which will consist of engraved paving stones between the bus loop and the staff parking area.

Mrs. Seymour, Alumni and Mrs. Wooden, Guidance Counselor at Mace's Lane proudly show off the Mace's Lane High School Alumni memorabilia showcase, now on display in the new Media Center.
